Chapter Ten

15 Jumada 1404 yp

Orde eyed the Prime Councilor with disfavor. "Excuse me? And how, pray tell, am I supposed to rein in their stupidity? You led the stampede into outrage and overconfidence that has resulted in an embarrassing public debacle. You led the mob howling for the vote of No Confidence. Why don't you tell Edte to stop threatening to challenge Xen to a duel? Why don't you tell Agni to think before he opens his mouth? And Ynbu? You had him solidly in your pocket, pulling half of the Multitude Supreme party into alignment with the War Party's core platform. What the hell happened, Mr. Prime Councilor?"

The man glowered. "The Army Unit underestimated Wolfson. Or your precious Dancer betrayed them."

"Or perhaps putting a committee of war mongers in charge of the Empire put everyone in Disco and on Comet Fall on the alert? Xen was outside, invisible, watching for trouble. Look at Rael. He came up behind her. Your . . . excuse me . . . Agni's clever plan was blown from the very start."

"It wasn't . . . all Agni's plan."

"The reputations of the top men of the five largest parties have been trashed by this utterly insane aggression. Think about that."

"Agni still holds the War Party in the palm of his hand. You'll see." The PC scowled.

"Nine days until the election. Let's talk again—or not—afterwards." Orde rose and the PC grudgingly let himself be shown out. He growled as Orde followed him, shook his hand outside the main entrance and stalked down the stairs and into his limo as it pulled up.

The perpetual reporters closed in on Orde.

"What did you and the Prime Councilor talk about, Mr. President?"

"We just touched base on a few issues. It'll give us both nine days to consider how best to handle the inevitable downside to these permanent gates and corridors. The issues with shipping and trucking, airline flights . . . We need to moderate the impact on the people whose livelihoods depends on trucking and shipping." And everyone knows we wouldn't have these incredible advances—and a booming economy with full employment—without Comet Fall.

"Mr. President! What about the genetic attack?"

"That is being addressed diplomatically. And also somewhat . . . individually, as I understand a number of people have gone to the Comet Fall Hospital on Embassy and gotten the genes replaced. Without any problems."

"But what about Rael?"

"Rael is as safe as possible right now. After the election." He looked the vid cams straight on. "After I win. I will see about getting her and the squad of soldiers released."

"Do you really think you can win? The Council vote was overwhelmingly against you!"

"What the Council of the Empire wants is very different from what the people of the Empire want."
